The butterfly has been a symbol for the psyche, the sense of freedom, joy, hope and inspiration. 

Butterflies are one of many awesome living organisms to be severely threatened by man-made climate change.

Their biological capacity to metamorphose from a caterpillar into a wonderful, colorful creature with ethereal wings, can be a reminder for us humans that we can have the ability to adapt to changes; a necessary skill for survival.

We may therefore understand butterflies as symbols of hope and adaptability in a rapidly changing world. We may also reflect on the butterfly effect and the severe impact small scale changes can have on established systems. 

Butterflies in Art history

Still life paintings by Dutch Masters in the 17th century depict butterflies as memento mori:  reminders “of the impermanence of worldly luxuries and the eternal nature of the soul”.

Van Gogh painted a series devoted to butterflies, as he saw a connection to human nature: men and women have this innate ability to change their reality, to make amendments towards improvement.

Frida Kahlo paints her self-portrait with butterflies crowning her, as a symbol of revival after her tragic accident.

 

Butterflies remind us that when we follow nature’s path, or nature’s ways, we are able to live a harmonious life.
